عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّى﴿1﴾
The Prophet frowned and turned away (English: Saheeh International)
He frowned and then turned away (English: Sarwar)
أَنْ جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَى﴿2﴾
Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. (English: Saheeh International)
from a blind man who had come up to him. (English: Sarwar)
وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّى﴿3﴾
But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified (English: Saheeh International)
You never know. Perhaps he wanted to purify himself,N (English: Sarwar)
أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنْفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَى﴿4﴾
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? (English: Saheeh International)
or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. (English: Sarwar)
أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَى﴿5﴾
As for he who thinks himself without need,N (English: Saheeh International)
Yet you pay attention (English: Sarwar)
فَأَنْتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّى﴿6﴾
To him you give attention. (English: Saheeh International)
to a rich man,N (English: Sarwar)
وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّى﴿7﴾
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. (English: Saheeh International)
though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. (English: Sarwar)
وَأَمَّا مَنْ جَاءَكَ يَسْعَى﴿8﴾
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] (English: Saheeh International)
As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). (English: Sarwar)
وَهُوَ يَخْشَى﴿9﴾
While he fears [Allah],N (English: Saheeh International)
and who has fear of God,N (English: Sarwar)
فَأَنْتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّى﴿10﴾
From him you are distracted. (English: Saheeh International)
you ignore him. (English: Sarwar)
