¡ A sūrah that We have sent down, and ordained, and in which We have sent down clear signs, that haply you may remember.
1 An implied subject at the start of this verse would have it begin, “This is a sūrah . . . ” For some, ordained refers to the many important rulings that are legislated in this sūrah (R). The verb rendered by ordained (faraḍa) also means “to allocate” or “to apportion,” in which case it is interpreted to mean that the Quran is revealed portion by portion (Q).
