قَالَ قَائِلٌ مِنْهُمْ لَا تَقْتُلُوا يُوسُفَ وَأَلْقُوهُ فِي غَيَابَتِ الْجُبِّ يَلْتَقِطْهُ بَعْضُ السَّيَّارَةِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ فَاعِلِينَ 10

Ċ One among them said, “Slay not Joseph, but cast him into the depths of the well, that some caravan might pick him up, if you would take some action.” 10 One among them is a reference to their oldest brother (IK), who is not identified in the Quran but whose action resembles that of either Judah (R) or Reuben (cf. Genesis 37:22-28; Bḍ, IK, Ṭū). According to the majority of commentators, the suggestion to cast him into the depths of the well, that some caravan might pick him up did not meet with the brothers’ approval until later; see 12:15c.
